What is Advanced Placement Statistics?
Course Content and Relevance
The AP Statistics course teaches you how to collect, analyze, and interpret data to make informed decisions and is equivalent to an introductory statistics college course. It’s crucial for high school students considering college degrees in data analysis, medicine, business, finance, economics, agriculture, engineering, sociology, psychology, political science, and more.
Exam Format and Scoring
The Advanced Placement Statistics exam comprises two sections: multiple-choice and free-answer. Each section tests your ability to think critically and communicate your understanding of statistics. Scoring well can earn you college credits and placement allowing you to skip introductory statistics courses in college. It can also improve your college application prospects.
Benefits of Mastering Statistics
Mastering AP Statistics not only sharpens your analytical skills but also enhances your problem-solving abilities, preparing you for college classes. It’s a significant stepping stone for any data-driven profession. My Chicago tutoring service can boost your comprehension and take care of your exam preparation.
Why choose me as your AP Statistics Tutor in Chicago or Online?
Customized Learning Plan
Clear communication of your goals and what you hope to achieve is crucial. Are you struggling with specific concepts, or do you need help with exam strategies? I help with both and I usually assess this at our first meeting and continuously sense your level during our statistics tutoring sessions. Constructive feedback will be essential in helping you improve. I’ll create a personalized learning plan that caters specifically to your needs, focusing on areas for improvement and leveraging your strengths.
Credentials and Experience
With my Physics Ph.D. (The University of Chicago) I have a strong background in mathematics subjects such as statistics. I also have substantial teaching experience as a college professor in statistics for 6 years (City Colleges of Chicago) and a private AP Statistics tutor for more than 15 years. Additionally, I have been a math tutor for other standardized tests, such as ACT, SAT, GMAT, and GRE, for more than 15 years so I have exceptional problem-solving abilities.
Tutoring Style and Benefits
As a former college professor, I have taught statistics to a diverse student population with various learning needs and can adapt to any personal preferences. I know how to simplify complex topics and I can explain any stats question in an easy-to-understand language, without the math jargon. The main problem with statistics classes is that students do not get the meaning behind the formulas, and I can give you the bird overview so you don’t get lost in the details. This will dramatically boost your understanding of statistics and you will start noticing how its meaning is commonly twisted in the news and medical studies.
Online AP Statistics Tutoring
For the online sessions, you will need only a microphone. I will share my screen with the problems/concepts and I will write what you verbalize, while you are doing the work in your notebook, so that you won’t need a digital pen or a graphing tablet at all. At the end of the session, I will email you a pdf file with all of my notes.
In-Person Lessons in Uptown Chicago
As long as we have the problems to solve as a file and the same textbook, meeting in person is not required and does not have any additional benefit in my experience. We can do a few initial sessions in person and then we can switch to online tutoring. I can meet at any public place like a Starbucks, a coffee shop, or a local library in Uptown Chicago, 60640 IL, or along the Red Line from Downtown and north to Rogers Park.
View My Math Tutoring Reviews and Solutions
I don’t have a lot of online reviews since I have always considered those quite fake but if you would like to view a few recent reviews of my tutoring, feel free to visit my Wyzant tutoring profile. The “Examples of Expertise” section on the bottom will show you close to 100 solutions written by me in algebra, calculus, statistics, physics, ACT, SAT, GMAT, and GRE, so you get a better idea of my problem-solving abilities.
Resources for Statistics
Books and Online Practice
I typically use the well-reviewed textbooks for AP Statistics: Barron’s and Princeton Review, as they provide sufficient exam details and tailored strategies, a full overview of statistics, and practice questions. Barron’s books provide more practice and a review at a higher level, suitable for students wishing an AP Statistics score of 4 or 5. Princeton Review gives an overview at a slightly lower level but more understandable for students targeting more moderate scores such as 3 or 4. Additionally, Barron’s books have online AP Statistics practice. We can also supplement with any standard textbook in college statistics for expanded explanations of the concepts.
Statistics Calculators and Software
Your score on the AP Statistics Exam depends on your statistics knowledge and the quick and efficient use of your statistics calculator. A graphing calculator with statistical capabilities, such as TI-83 or TI-84, is indispensable and I teach how to use it effectively for any statistics question that may happen on the exam.
Some college classes use the stats functions of the same calculators, while others use Excel with the Data Analysis package or specialized statistics software. My preferred software for introductory statistics is StatCrunch (typically included with MyStatLab courses) but I have also used and can help with SPSS (typically used in Sociology and Psychology) or Minitab. ALEKS stat classes usually use their own online calculator.
